Rondebosch’s housing is mostly Victorian, Edwardian and mock Tudor stock from the 19th and early 20th centuries, with apartment blocks and converted cottages alongside it. Those buildings give an installer plenty to think about before a single panel is ordered.

- Talk to the City’s heritage professionals before design is finalised. The guideline describes this as a free service.
- Keep conduit and cable runs out of sight and avoid fixing equipment to the street elevation.
Raise heritage early. A design that has to be redrawn after the equipment has been ordered is the costliest kind of change.
Flats, Sectional Title Schemes and Rentals
A 2016 property-industry article reported that only 54% of Rondebosch properties were freehold and that 49% of transactions since 2005 had been sectional title sales, with many apartment and cottage investors buying to let to students and young professionals. A landlord who installs a system adds an asset to the property. A tenant who wants a battery for load-shedding may be better served by a portable solution that leaves the building untouched. Either way, an electrical certificate and City authorisation are still required for anything connected to the installation.
Wind, Weather and Shading Around the Mountain
Rondebosch lies below the slopes of Table Mountain, and Cape Town’s south-easter is the main wind consideration for mounting. Panels act like sails, so the fixings, rail spacing, clamp torque and roof structure must all be right. Registration is free, the City issues a Permission to Install, and the system may only be switched on after commissioning approval.
