Designing solar for a links-course shoreline

Atlantic Beach is a coastal development of several hundred homes arranged in villages and clusters, laid out around a links course, dunes and conserved fynbos. That setting is beautiful, but it is demanding on equipment. Salt-laden air, blowing sand and regular strong wind mean the cheapest hardware tends to age badly. We choose mounting rails, clamps, fixings and cable glands for a marine-influenced environment, seal roof penetrations carefully and keep the inverter and battery in a garage, utility room or other sheltered position rather than on an exposed wall.

Wind loading is the second consideration. Modern coastal roofs often include light sheeting, concealed fix profiles or flat sections, and each of those needs a different mounting approach. We inspect the roof, confirm what it can carry and design the layout so that panels stay put in the strongest gusts and still look tidy from the street and from neighbouring fairways.

Roof orientation, sea views and estate approvals

Many houses on the estate are positioned to capture views of the sea, Table Mountain or Robben Island, which means a good number of roofs face west or north-west. For solar, a west-facing plane can still produce well, and it tends to generate later in the day when households use more power. Where a house offers both a north and a west plane, we often split the array between them to spread production across the day. We also look at parapets, gable ends and lift-shaft or stair-tower shadows on larger homes.

Because the estate is run by a homeowners’ association with design and environmental sensitivity, external changes generally need to be approved before work begins. Thermo helps navigate that where plausible: we provide drawings, positions and product information in a form the estate manager or design committee can review, so you do not have to produce them yourself.

For a holiday home, a smaller system with sensible monitoring and a battery that keeps security, fridge and router online can make more sense than a large array that mostly exports power. Does salt air damage solar panels at Atlantic Beach?

I only use my house part of the year. Is solar worth it?
