Solar Installations Lourensford

Thermo Group — Solar Experts You Can Trust

Lourensford is one of the Helderberg’s great working estates, a Somerset West property of orchards, vineyards, forest and fynbos that has been farmed since the early eighteenth century. Thermo Group designs and installs commercial solar PV, battery backup and hybrid inverter systems for farms, cellars, hospitality venues and estate buildings in and around the Lourensford valley.

An estate of this kind uses electricity in ways a suburb does not: irrigation pumps, cooling, cellar equipment, workshops, retail and restaurant kitchens, all across separate buildings and sometimes far-flung supply points. We look at each meter and each roof or open site, then design systems that cut daytime costs and protect the operations that cannot afford an outage.

What We Plan For At Lourensford

🍇
Seasonal Farm Loads
Irrigation, cooling and cellar equipment peak at certain times of year, not evenly. We study meter history to find the daytime demand that solar can cover, and size the system for the busy months.
🏛️
Heritage Buildings
Historic werf and farm buildings may be protected, and street-facing roofs are rarely suitable. We favour modern sheds, outbuildings and ground-mount sites, and advise when extra approvals could be needed.
🔌
Several Meters
Large estates often have multiple supply points, from cellars and workshops to staff housing. We review each one and decide which justify solar, which need batteries and which are best left alone.
🍴
Hospitality Loads
Restaurants, markets, galleries and event spaces run kitchens, refrigeration, lighting and air-conditioning during opening hours. Solar suits those daytime loads, and batteries can keep tills and cold rooms running in an outage.

A working estate with many different electricity users

Lourensford was established in the early eighteenth century and has been a fruit farm and, more recently, a wine producer, with orchards, vineyards, forest and fynbos across a very large property. Today it also hosts a market, restaurants, galleries, a motor museum and a range of sports facilities. Each of those has its own load pattern. A cellar peaks around harvest and cooling needs, an orchard or vineyard depends on irrigation pumps through the dry months, and a restaurant or market runs through opening hours, sometimes late into the evening. We do not apply one formula to all of them. We read meter histories, walk the buildings and propose separate systems where that makes more sense than one large one.

The result is usually a mix of roof-mounted arrays on modern sheds and outbuildings, possibly ground-mounted systems on unused land, and battery backup limited to the circuits where an outage would be costly, such as cold rooms, tills, security and communications.

Irrigation, cooling and the daytime profile

Agricultural electricity use leans heavily towards daylight hours, which is excellent for solar. Pumps that fill dams or push water through drip lines, fans and cooling systems, and packing or processing equipment all tend to run while the sun is high. The Cape summer is dry and bright, so production aligns well with demand. Winters are wetter and cloudier, so we size the system for the whole year and not only for summer peaks, and we explain what to expect from month to month.

Large motors are a design consideration. Starting currents on pumps can be several times their running load, so inverter selection and soft-starting matter. We assess three-phase supply, protection and cable runs, and where a pump is far from the nearest building, we consider whether a dedicated ground-mount system makes more sense than long cable runs.

Heritage, approvals and ground-mount sites

Parts of the Helderberg are rich in historic buildings, and an estate werf may include structures with heritage significance. Panels on street-facing or historic roofs are rarely appropriate, and additional approvals may apply to older or protected buildings. We favour modern roofs and discreet ground-mount sites, and we tell you early if a proposed location is likely to need extra permission. Agricultural and commercial businesses may also benefit from tax allowances for renewable energy investment, which is a matter to confirm with your accountant. We provide clear technical and financial documentation to support that discussion.

We Don't Just Install — We Maintain

Farm and estate systems face dust, pollen, bird droppings and the occasional grass fire or storm. Thermo provides maintenance, repairs, fault finding and panel cleaning, along with inspections of cabling, inverters, monitoring and batteries. Regular checks help protect production, especially in the months when your demand is highest.

Municipal And Eskom Registration For Lourensford

Lourensford is in Somerset West, within the City of Cape Town’s area. Any grid-tied solar system must be registered as small-scale embedded generation with whichever authority supplies your meter, which is usually the City, though some farm supply points are served directly by Eskom. We confirm your supply authority first, then prepare and submit the correct application, with approved equipment and an installation certificate of compliance. We also advise if heritage or land-use approval is likely to apply.

Often, because pumps, cooling and processing run in daylight. The benefit depends on your tariff, seasonal consumption and available roof or ground space. We analyse your meter history and show likely savings with and without batteries before you commit.
Yes, but pump size and starting current must be handled properly. We check motor ratings, three-phase supply and cable runs, then select inverters and soft-starting or variable-speed drives where needed. In some cases, a dedicated ground-mount system near the pump is the neatest solution.
It depends on who supplies your meter. Lourensford is in Somerset West, in the City of Cape Town area, but some farm connections are supplied by Eskom. We check your account, then prepare the correct embedded generation application and certificate of compliance.
Rarely on visible or heritage-protected roofs. Older structures may need additional approval, and the look of the werf matters. We prefer modern sheds, outbuildings and discreet ground-mount sites, and we advise early if a location is likely to raise heritage questions.
Not everywhere. For pumps and daytime loads, panels alone are often enough. Batteries make sense for cold rooms, tills, security and communications that must keep running in an outage. We identify those circuits during the site visit and size storage for them only.
It can be, where roofs are old, shaded, heritage-sensitive or far from the load. Ground-mount needs land, cable routes, fencing and wind-resistant foundations. We compare both options and give you the real costs and yield for each.
Yes. Kitchens, refrigeration, lighting and air-conditioning run during opening hours, matching solar production well. We plan installation around trading times, consider landlord and tenant arrangements, and can add battery backup for tills and cold rooms to protect against outages.
