A surge protection device (SPD) sits at your distribution board and diverts excess voltage to earth before it reaches your appliances. It is only as good as your earthing, so we check that too.

Does surge protection stop lightning damage?
It greatly reduces the risk from nearby strikes and grid surges, but no device can promise protection from a direct strike.
Is a plug-in surge protector enough?
A plug-in protector helps for single devices, but a device at the board protects the whole installation. Many homes use both.
Does a surge protection device wear out?
Yes. It takes a hit each time it diverts a surge, so it should be checked, especially after a severe storm.
Do I need a certificate of compliance for surge protection?
